The roles inverted

One of the most famous dancers of the eighteenth century was Gaetano Vestris. That´s why they called him The God of Dance. He was very proud of his artistry and utterly aware of his talent.

Once he brusquely replied to a comment made by the director of the Paris Opera. And the director, offended, replied:

-Do you know who you're talking to?

-Yes, sir, replied Vestris. I am speaking with someone who earns a living off of my work.

In this case I am in fact the director of the Paris Opera. I earn a living from the work of musicians, among many other artists. Occasionally I write about them, which gives them reason to ask indignantly:

-Do you know who you're talking to?

At that moment I realize they do not know that while they may ask the question, the response from me can only that which Vestris.ventured. Never the other way round. The roles are inverted.
